Buckle up, kids. The web home of your favorite scribblings is about to undergo some major renovation. This website has now been running for almost three years, and the tech that powers it under the hood has seen some major upgrades. (For those of you versed in WordPress-speak: Gutenberg!)
But the so-called front end—that’s what you see in your browser when you come here—hasn’t developed to keep pace with these changes. Also, web design standards and conventions evolve, and it’s nice to give things a new lick of paint every now and then.
But here’s the rub, kind reader: I have no idea what I’m doing. Words are my bread and butter, but playing at webmaster fills me with the deep dread of undiluted impostor syndrome.
The look and feel of this site are governed by a “theme”: an extensive suite of modules and preferences, knobs and levers, settings and code that together give each web page here its visual and functional identity. And what will be happening over the coming weeks is a switch to a new theme.
If I were a competent web designer, I’d reconfigure the entire website behind the scenes and, in due time, introduce you to the all-new hoetink.com in one big festive reveal, with flourishes and all. But I’m not, so I won’t.
So here’s what will happen.
At some point in the coming weeks, this website will suddenly be different. Certain things will look odd, and some details might not work as expected. That’s the new theme in its rough and unpolished form.
Then you’ll see minor adjustments accumulate over time as I iron out all of the kinks, bringing the site closer to its new design. A color may change here, a font there; a new image may be added at this end, an old button scrubbed at that end.
Three Ifs and No Buts About It
If a page looks too wonky to read—that’s my bad. I’ll figure it out. Bear with me.
If you like what you see, please let me know. Any and all constructive feedback is welcome.
Meanwhile, I’m going to put my webslinger hardhat back on again ? and get cracking on that new window dressing. Wish me luck!
